Case Summary

The claimant claimed unlawful deductions from wages totalling £356.25 (£75 in May 2025 and £281.25 in June 2025). The respondent failed to present a valid response on time. The tribunal determined the claim under rule 22 and ordered the respondent to pay the claimant £356.25 in respect of the unlawful wage deductions. The claimant's additional claim for £2000 for stress caused by the tribunal process was dismissed as the tribunal lacked jurisdiction to award such compensation for an unlawful deduction claim.

Why this outcome?

Default — respondent did not respond

The respondent made unauthorised deductions from the claimant's wages totalling £356.25, which the tribunal found to be unlawful. The claimant's additional claim for stress damages was dismissed because the tribunal has no jurisdiction to award such compensation in respect of an unlawful deduction of wages claim.

Key Issues

  • Unauthorised deductions from wages
  • Jurisdiction to award damages for stress caused by tribunal process
